the vision appeared to me for this dance routine while I was washing dishes one afternoon. I saw myself dropping down dramatically and repetitively while we played relentless quarter notes on the floor of starfoods (1st ave & 1st street in the LES during the early 00's).
I thought: 'could that even be done'??
and thus began the most challenging routine leif and I have ever done onstage. the amount of preparation it required was formidable, but never not never not once did we play this and see a room standing still.
during college I had become fairly obsessed with the geometric choreography of lucinda childs from the 1970s. it always struck me as funky in this deeply sexually-repressed way. childs created choreography that seemed at first glance to be repetitive but upon closer inspection revealed itself to be an un-followable pattern. this was an idea we all found pretty exciting and applied across the board aesthetically.
